Detangling Natural Hair Extensions

How To Detangle Kinky-Curly Hair Extensions

The beauty of natural hair extensions is that they provide a seamless blend with your own natural hair. If you’re wearing high-quality extensions in the right texture, no one will know your secret (click here to find your texture match). Choosing to sport hair extensions that perfectly mimic the curls, kinks, and coils of natural hair comes with a maintenance routine that’s just like your own hair. You must shampoo, condition and gently detangle just as you would the hair that’s growing out of your scalp.

Here are 3 tips to help you detangle and revitalize kinky-curly hair extensions while preserving the integrity of the hair:

1. Moisturize

Always start your detangling process on wet hair and conditioned hair. When hair is wet and a slippery conditioner is applied, the hair is lubricated. This allows the hair strands to slip, glide and slide past each other preventing and releasing tangles.

2. Work in Sections

How to define natural hair extensions

After the application of water and conditioner, split your hair into 2 - 6 sections (depending on hair density) before picking up a detangling tool. Working in sections will allow for more manageability. You’ll feel less overwhelmed when you work in smaller sections.

3. Start From The Bottom

Starting from the bottom using a detangling brush for thick hair or a wide-tooth comb, slowly and gently work your way up to the root (or weft) of the extensions. Although tangles can exist throughout the shaft of the hair, starting from the root (or weft) of the extensions will create more tangles as you move your detangling tool towards the bottom of the hair. It is better to release tangles and knots and the ends of the hair first, as the hair at the root (or weft) doesn’t hang loosely to interact with other strands of hair causing more tangles.
